Tips and Tackle for Walleye fishing

Date: Apr 25th Time:

Rick Socholotuk, from Fort Frances, is an outdoors enthusiast. In addition to his day job Rick has, for many years, taught courses in firearms, hunter’s education, snowmobile and water safety as well as guiding fishermen and hunters. He has also been involved in adult fish transplanting and spawning bed rehabilitation with the MNR in north-western Ontario.

In 2000, Rick retired from teaching elementary school after 32 years in this profession. Retirement offered him more time to indulge his passion for angling.

Fishing has been an important element in Rick’s life for as long as he can remember. An original member of the Fort Frances Bass Championship, Rick served as a director for seven years. During this time, he and Bill Morgenstern developed the very successful Kid-Pro program that teamed FFCBC fishermen with children, for a day of competitive fishing. The Kid-Pro tournament is still thriving and kids and pros alike look forward to this special day on the water.

Although primarily a bass tournament fisherman, Rick has been gradually moving in the direction of competitive walleye fishing. In 2007, he fished the PWT (Professional Walleye Trail), as an amateur, for the first time in Dryden. This was a super-pro event that paired pro walleye fishermen with amateur co-anglers. He also fished a PWT event in Cass Lake Minnesota. These tournaments gave Rick a unique opportunity to observe and experiment with many proven methods utilized by the pros. He was delighted to be able to acquire valuable walleye information from the likes of Steve Fellegy, Keith Kavejez, Ron Seelhoff, “Doc’ Tom Johnson, Pat Neu and Tom Kemos. 2008 will find Rick fishing more PWT and FLW events.

Rick will be part of Atikokan’s ‘Let’s Go Outdoors Show’ where he will be offering ‘Tips and Tackle’ for walleye fishing. Children are invited to drop by and learn how to make spinners.

Cross Country Ski Maintenance

Date: Apr 25th Time: 7:00 PM

Ski maintenance is an important aspect of skiing that goes ignored too often. Learning what to do and when to do it will keep your skis in tiptop condition and help you enjoy your outdoor adventures to the fullest. Even in the spring, there is work to be done on your skis. Just because there is no snow on the ground, doesn’t mean that you can throw your skis up in the rafters of the garage and walk away. Lana Puumala will show you how to maintain your skis from the day that you buy them until the day that you don’t use them anymore, which will hopefully be a lifetime!

Lana Puumala is a Thunder Bay native who moved to Atikokan in order to pursue her career (teaching) and is loving every minute she spends here. Lana grew up skiing, as her whole family spent many hours on the ski trails surrounding Thunder Bay. She began racing at a very early age, and made the switch to coaching when she finished university. Her various accomplishments include competing in a World Cup in 1994, being named the Lakehead University Female Athlete of the Year in 1994, being named Overall Female Champion at the Ontario University Championships in 1994, 1995, and 1999. She also qualified and completed at the Canadian Cross Country Skiing National Championships from 1985 to 1999, including the Nordic Combined National Championships from 1985 to 1989. She was a member of the Ontario Ski Team and the Junior National Development Team. Her current pursuits revolve around her young family and her love of skiing. This past year, she coached the Atikokan High School Nordic Ski Team at the NWOSSA Championships, where all three members qualified to compete at the OFSAA Championships (only one was able to attend). The team is now looking forward to next year and trying to better their showing. Lana is also trying to promote a love of skiing in her two young children by taking them on the trails as much as possible in their Chariot (a stroller on skis). Her daughter (2.5 years old), Karlyn, is now having adventures on ‘her own skis’ with her, which makes the whole family very proud.
